Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS)

BAAITS Mission Statement: Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits (BAAITS) exists to restore and recover the role of Two-Spirit people within the American Indian/First Nations community by creating a forum for the spiritual, cultural and artistic expression of Two-Spirit people.

We recognize and honor Two-Spirit people and the LGBTQA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Asexual and/or (straight) Ally) community, a little after Gay Pride Month, June. The term “Two-Spirit” refers to the fact that many Native American tribes realized that “some individuals naturally possessed and manifested both masculine and feminine spiritual qualities.”

On February 9 of this year BAAITS held their ninth annual powwow at Fort Mason, which was recently featured in a PBS documentary shown in June. More information can be found here:http://www.baaits.org/
